Breakout rooms in Zoom
Breakout rooms allow you to split your Zoom meeting into separate session for up to 200 total participants. You can create up to 50 breakout rooms in your meeting. As the meeting host, you can choose to split the participants of the meeting into these separate sessions automatically or manually, and can switch between sessions at any time.
Breakout room participants have full audio, video and screen share capabilities. Participants can exit a breakout room at any time. An instructor can invite participants to leave, but cannot force them to leave. There are two ways to configure breakout rooms:
- Assign within a meeting (on the fly).
- Pre-assign before a meeting.

- During a meeting, click the Breakout Room icon on the Zoom navigation bar.
- In the Breakout Room pop-up window, set how many rooms you need and whether participants will be assigned automatically or manually.
- Click the Create Rooms button.
- The rooms palette opens. If you had automatically assigned participants to breakout rooms, they will be distributed randomly. You can change room participation by dragging participants between rooms. Or, you can manually assign participants into breakout room groups by clicking the Assign button.
- Hover over a default room name to change its name or delete the room.
- The Options button at the bottom of the rooms palette presents additional settings for the breakout rooms, including timing and configuration.
- Click Open All Rooms when you are ready to begin a breakout room session.
Some features to note:
- Hosts can move from room to room.
- A timer can be set under Options that starts when all Breakout Room sessions begin. Also, the host can message all rooms at the same time (for example, to alert them the time is almost over).
- If you would like to record the session, click Record before you create the Breakout Rooms. For details, see Enabling breakout rooms

Self-selecting breakout rooms
In the self-selecting breakout room option, students can view and join the breakout rooms of their choosing. They will be able to enter and leave breakout rooms freely, without the assistance of the host. This configuration in that host and participants can only access self-selecting breakout rooms when logged in to the Zoom desktop client or mobile app.
NOTE: Participants who are not joined via the desktop or mobile app will not be able to self-select a breakout room. The host will need to facilitate moving these participants manually.

Self-selecting breakout rooms are only an option with the desktop client or mobile app. It is critical to update the Zoom software you are using.
- Open your desktop client. At the upper right, click on your account picture.

Pre-assign participants to breakout rooms
NOTE: All participants must have configured a licensed Zoom account before they can be assigned to a breakout room. They should be directed to sign in at umd.zoom.us if they have not set up their UMD licensed account. Only licensed account holders can be preassigned to Zoom breakout rooms. This includes UMD students who otherwise do not need licensed accounts to participants in instructor meetings scheduled in ELMS-Canvas course spaces.

Other considerations
- For meetings scheduled in ELMS-Canvas, only the instructor of record can create and configure pre-assigned breakout rooms. This is not an administrative task that can be performed by teaching assistants or co-hosts.
- Once the host has created and named the breakout rooms, they cannot be renamed.
- Participants who join a Zoom meeting and breakout room by phone cannot leave the breakout room. The host must close the breakout room in order to force an exit of phone participants
- Participants cannot be removed from a breakout room.
- Recordings follow the host. If you want all rooms recorded, the host must go into a room and allow a participant in that room to do a local recording.
- Host can admit participants from the Waiting Room while within a Breakout Room on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS.
Host is notified of participants in the Waiting Room, even while currently in a Breakout Room. The host can admit each participant one at a time, or all at once. If pre-assignments for breakout rooms are active, participants will be asked to join their pre-assigned breakout rooms. Otherwise, the host can assign participants directly to the breakout room of their choosing.
NOTE: Meeting Hosts have the capability to disable the Waiting Room feature. If this feature is not disabled, participants with non-UMD identities will be held in the Waiting Room until the meeting hosts admit them.
