This guide will allow the instructor to use the audiovisual features in the General Purpose Classrooms to provide a multimedia experience.
NOTE: The touch panel you find in your classroom may not exactly correspond to the one you see in this guide. If you desire further clarification on the touch panel in your assigned classroom, contact DIT Classroom Support at 301-405-2500.
The AV touch panel will have a blank screen and may be on the instructor's lectern or on a wall adjacent to the lectern. To wake up the AV touch panel, tap the screen once. You are first greeted with a prompt to Touch Screen to Start.
Touch the screen one more time to start the system.
By default, PC Main will be displayed on the projector(s) and monitor when you begin your session. To change what is being displayed in the classroom, simply press a source button (i.e. HDMI device) and then press the destination you want to send it to (i.e. Monitor). The yellow text on the destination buttons displays the current source for that destination.
By default, PC Main will be the current Audio Source. The Audio Source will automatically change to the last source with applicable audio that you send to a destination. The current Audio Source will always be displayed in the top right corner.
To navigate to the Device Control page, please select the Device Control button at the top of the AV touch panel.
The Device Control page in most classrooms will give you the ability to control the volume of the selected device, make camera adjustments and raise or lower screens. In a number of classrooms, there may be a Lights button that will allow you to control the lighting levels in the room.
In a lecture hall or many TERP classrooms, the Device Control page may appear with more devices to control, such as an AV Bridge button.
The Device Control button will take you to the Device Control page where you will see the volume control.
From there you can raise, lower or mute the audio output of the device you are using. The bar should rise or fall as you make adjustments from the panel. The sound that is played is the last source with audio that was sent to a destination.
If you do not hear audio or audio from a different device, first make sure that the source you sent to a destination was the final source that was sent. This can be confirmed by looking at the Audio Source indicator in the top right corner of the touch screen, which will list the source that is currently playing audio.
If the source listed is not the source you want to play, resend that source to its destination. The Audio Source indicator should now display the correct source. Next, make sure the volume is up on both the device being used as the source and the touch panel. Finally, make sure the volume is not muted on either the device or the touch panel.
At the top of each page on the touch screen is a button labeled Call Classroom Support. When you press that button a second box will open.
When you select the green call button you will be connected to Classroom Support. There is a speaker and microphone located within the touch panel that will allow you to speak to Classroom Support remotely. Alternatively, contact information for DIT Classroom Support can be found on the information page in the mouse pad and on the background of the classroom computer (PC Main).
Select the Camera Button on the Device Control page to control the camera in the classroom. If a room has only one camera it will be located at the back of the room and have buttons with 3 settings to view the Room, the Presenter (focused on the lectern position) and the Screen. The controls also allow the instructor to move the camera right-to-left, up-and-down and zoom-in-and-out, which is especially helpful when the presets are not working or in the desired position.
Most lecture halls and TERP classrooms have multiple cameras, usually with one camera at the rear of the classroom and one in the front of the room to capture the audience.
In most of these rooms, you should see signage next to the camera telling you if this is camera A or camera B. It is important to make sure the correct camera is selected on the camera control, because it may be different from the camera you have sent to the Projector or Shared Video destination buttons. Once the correct camera is selected, the controls are the same as those in a standard classroom.
The PC Extended source acts as a second screen/monitor for the classroom computer. Instructors can display content to two separate displays from the classroom computer by utilizing both the PC Main and PC Extended buttons.
Additionally, this feature enables Presenter View mode in PowerPoint, which allows the teacher to be able to see their notes, upcoming slides and timer, while the class only sees the current presentation slide on the PC Extended screen. To set up Presenter View, send PC Main to the lectern Monitor destination, and send the PC Extended to the Projector destination(s).
If you wish to stop displaying the video source select Press to Blank. The projector image(s) will now be blank. The same button will now read Press to Unblank, which you should select to resume showing the image(s) on the screen(s).
In the top right corner of the touch screen page, you are on, you will see the Audio Source indicator. The indicator displays the current audio source being played by the sound system. It is the first place to check when you do not hear the audio you want playing.
Select Shutdown A/V System on the AV touch panel to power off the system. A new box will open to confirm. Select Yes, shutdown A/V system on the AV touch panel to power off the system.
In many Lecture Halls and TERP Classrooms there is an AV Bridge. The AV Bridge acts as the interface between the classroom technology and Zoom and Panopto on the classroom computer (PC Main).
When using the Zoom or Panopto applications on the classroom computer (PC Main), both the audio and video sources should have AV Bridge as the selected source. There are lecture halls and TERP classrooms that have a 2nd AV Bridge. On the Select Video Source page, this is listed as the Shared Video 2 destination button. The second AV bridge can act as a Picture-in-Picture(PiP) with Shared Video 1. You can control the placement of this PiP by going to the Device Control page and selecting the AV Bridge button. This will open a box on the page which will allow the instructor to choose the location of the PiP.
The monitor at the teaching desk/lectern displays the classroom computer (PC Main) by default. However, if the instructor wants to display another source to the monitor, they can select the desired source then choose the Monitor destination button.
In standard classrooms there will usually be a single Projector destination button. In lecture halls and TERP Classrooms there may be multiple projector destination buttons, listed numerically (Projector 1, Projector 2, etc.) In rooms with multiple projectors, you may find signage posted adjacent to each with the corresponding number.
The PC Main source is the classroom computer. In standard classrooms the classroom computer is usually located at or near the teaching lectern so that you can easily insert CDs, DVDs, etc. to display in the classroom.
In all learning spaces, PC main is the default source for both the Monitor and Projector destinations.
On the Device Control page in a number of locations, you will see a Lights button. When this button is pressed, these options appear to control the room lighting as you see fit.
The Lights control gives the instructor a couple of options. You can select to have all the lights on or off. You can choose to have the lights at a lower 25% level. Depending on how the lights in the classroom or lecture hall are placed and configured, the Lecture and Presentation buttons will optimize the look for each.
When you need to display a device that cannot or will not connect through the available HDMI or VGA connectors, many lecture halls and TERP classrooms have a wireless collaboration device, Mersive Solstice, that can be used to connect that device. The teacher has the option to raise the screen from the control panel. To do so, click on the Screen button on the Device Control page, and then use the up or down arrows to raise or lower the screen.
